Homeopathic Remedies for Allergies

homeopathic remedies for allergies

Allergies are an immune response to substances that are eaten, touched, or inhaled. We often think about pollen and seasonal allergies, but allergic triggers vary from person to person and can also include mold, dander, dust, food, etc.

If you have allergies, an allergic trigger (allergen) will cause your immune system to overreact and treat an otherwise harmless substance as a threatening invader. This reaction often leads to symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, runny/stuffy nose, and sneezing. These allergy symptoms can seriously hamper your quality of life by adversely affecting your ability to work, sleep, and have fun.

Homeopathy is a natural and effective way to remedy the symptoms of allergies without the side effects of medications.

What Is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is the practice of medicine that utilizes a holistic, natural approach to treat symptoms and conditions. As counterintuitive as it may seem, homeopaths use drops or pellets that contain very small amounts of a substance that would normally cause a symptom or illness based on the theory that it will stimulate the body’s immune system to cure the illness or symptom.

Homeopathy is based on three principals: 1) Let likes cure likes, 2) The minimum dose, and 3) The single remedy.

Homeopathic pellets or drops remedy allergies by introducing a small amount of a substance that is producing an allergic response into the patient’s bloodstream, so the body responds by desensitizing to the allergen.

Homeopathic Remedies for Allergies

Homeopathic remedies provide powerful yet gentle treatment for allergy symptoms resulting from allergens that vary from person to person.

Common homeopathic remedies for allergies include:

  1. Allium Cepa

This is a good remedy to try if you have a watery, drippy discharge from your nose that burns and causes irritation around your nose and lip; bland tearing from your eyes that doesn’t burn; and eyes that are sensitive to light. Allium cepa might be for you if your runny nose is worse in the morning with profuse sneezing, and you are very sensitive to the scent of flowers and handling the skin of peaches.

  1. Arsenicum Album

This remedy is useful if you are allergic to various foods and substances, and you respond to allergens by feeling anxious, restless, and exhausted. You may also experience digestive responses, such as diarrhea and vomiting. Patients who benefit from Arsenicum are often asthmatic.

Sneezing is another prominent symptom for people who benefit from Arsenicum. Other symptoms include watery nasal discharge that burns and causes irritation on the upper lip and wings of the nose.

  1. Arundo

Arundo is a good choice for hayfever sufferers. You may have itching on the roof of your mouth and in the corners of your eyes. Other symptoms include head congestion with sniffling that starts with a runny nose and turns into green mucous. Your sinuses itch, burn, and feel dry.

  1. Euphrasia Officinalis

This remedy is helpful if your eyes are swollen and tearing heavily with a burning discharge that irritates, and you have bland nasal discharge (the opposite of Allium Cepa). Eyes feel worse in open air and wind. It’s also a useful remedy if you have an upper respiratory infection without a fever and coughing up phlegm.

  1. Natrum Muriaticum

Natrum Muriaticum is a remedy to try when you have allergy symptoms that include sneezing fits, watery or egg-white-like discharge from your nose, headaches, fatigue, chapped lips, cracks at the corners of your mouth and dark circles under your eyes. Headaches may tend to be worse in the late morning and early afternoon, and asthma may be worse in the early evening.

If you crave salt and tend to be very thirsty, it might mean this is the right remedy for you.

  1. Nux Vomica

A person who needs this remedy typically experiences irritability, cramping pains, and often feels cold. They are also highly sensitive to odors, light, and noise. They often crave sweets, caffeine, alcohol, etc., but feel worse when they consume them.

Someone who needs this remedy experiences a runny nose during the day and nasal stuffiness at night. They also have respiratory problems, itchiness inside ears, and burning eyes that are sensitive to light.

  1. Pulsatilla

Pulsatilla is a common remedy for both women and children with acute or chronic allergy symptoms. People who benefit from this remedy have a runny nose during the day and congestion at night (just like those who need Nux vomica).

However, people who need Pulsatilla have very different dispositions from people who need Nux vomica: they are typically gentle, mild, and emotional people who might seek sympathy but not conflict.

Milk products, rich foods, and fats worsen allergy symptoms in those who need Pulsatilla. They also tend to have itching at the roof of their mouths at night and aren’t thirsty.

  1. Sabadilla

This remedy is effective in treating allergies, especially hay fever, in people who experience frequent, spasmodic sneezing. Sneezing causes tearing from the eyes. These people feel better in a warm room, but their symptoms worsen in the open air.  They usually also have a copious, watery nasal discharge and red and burning eyelids.

They are not thirsty despite having a dry mouth. These people are also very sensitive to the smell of garlic.

  1. Wyethia

Wyethia is needed when a person’s allergies cause frustrating itching of the upper palate of their mouth. To get relief, the person will make “clucking” with their tongue. This person also has an itchy nose and throat, along with a constant desire to swallow saliva to relieve the dryness experienced.
